PLL has a scAndal on its hands.
Following Tuesday night’s Season 5 Summer Finale of Pretty Little Liars, many fans have called out the show’s creator for making her villain transgender simply to jump on the trend.
Well, seeing as transgender individuals finally getting representation in pop culture is a good thing, I. Marlene King, who wrote and directed the revealing episode, is defending her decision to make A trans.
In a recent interview, the pretty little author pointed out that her character has been in the works for years, saying:
“Well, we definitely came up with this idea three and a half years ago. I mean, it’s been a long time in the works and if you go back and you watch the CeCe episodes — because I went back and re-watched every single one, and re-read all the scripts to make sure I didn’t make any mistakes in this finale — we’ve told you she is A so many times.
I’m glad that there is a transgender trend anyways, but we certainly did not jump on the bandwagon. I like that we started it three and a half years ago without knowing it.”
There may still be a lot of glaring plot holes from the five years the ABC Family show has been on the air, but we don’t think Vanessa Ray‘s portrayal of a character who was assigned male at birth has anything to do with those issues.

In fact, Pretty Little Liars showed what can happen when transgender people are not accepted by society, and we think that’s a pretty commendable move on their part.
What did U think of the ultimate PLL reveal??
